Diwali or Deepawali is one of the most noticeable celebrations of Hindu culture. Deepawali, meaning a string of lights, is celebrated every year with great pomp and show across all the Indian communities. The northern part of India observes Diwali as Lord Rama’s homecoming to Ayodhya in the wake of overcoming the Rakshasa King of Lanka, Ravana. According to mythology, the people of Ayodhya lighted thousands of lamps as a gesture of welcome and respect for Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana.
The western part of India gives more prominence to Goddess Lakshmi, the harbinger of wealth. Diwali in western India is celebrated for over a fortnight. The states of India like Maharashtra and Gujarat join their celebrations with their authentic traditional flavor and legendary spirit. It is believed that the goddess of wealth visits all the houses on this day. Rangoli is an integral part of Diwali in all states of western India. The parts of the Bengal and eastern parts of India celebrate Diwali in a different way. Here, Diwali is associated with Goddess Kali. Diwali is celebrated as Kali Puja. Goddess Kali is worshiped during late night. Diwali night is also believed to be the night of the ancestors or Pitripurush and diyas are lit on long poles to guide their souls on the way to heaven. In the Southern part of India, Diwali is celebrated in the Tamil month of aipasi. This day precedes the Amavasai day. There, Naraka Chaturdashi is the main day of the Diwali celebrations. One day before Naraka Chaturdashi, the kitchen is cleaned and religious symbols are drawn. People wash their homes and decorate them with kolam designs
