Built in 1924 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary, the Gateway was intended to be the ceremonial entry point for British royalty. Ironically, it later became the symbolic exit for British troops in 1948. The exit that marked the end of colonial rule.
Its architecture is Indo-Saracenic. It is blending Islamic, Hindu, and European styles. Iit was constructed using yellow basalt and reinforced concrete. Every detail, from the intricate latticework to the huge central dome. It tells a story of empire, transition, and the city’s changing identity.
The gateway is a gorgeous sight that photos cannot capture. It is something you must see to understand the beauty of. It shows history, has architecture from many cultures and shows the bustling vibe of Mumbai. Make sure you visit when you can!
